Vehicle Position Refresh Rate – Understanding and Adjusting the Vehicle Position Refresh Rate of Your Telematics Fleet on the Route4Me Web Platform
The Vehicle Position Refresh Rate is the frequency at which Route4Me’s Telematics Gateway retrieves telematics data from your Telematics Vendor. Most Telematics Vendors receive and store data between 1 and 5 minutes, while other vendors can capture data at a higher frequency. Route4Me’s Telematics Gateway allows you to set up the preferred Vehicle Position Refresh Rate and extract telematics data from your telematics vehicles and devices as quickly as every second. Being able to adjust the Vehicle Position Refresh Rate of your telematics fleet allows you to get more control over your fleet, improve driver safety, identify underperforming vehicles and drivers, detect route deviations, and much more. To help you win the last mile and make your routing operations more streamlined and secure, Route4Me supports almost all Telematics Vendors currently available in the market. Moreover, in addition to the GPS trackers and telematics devices provided by various Telematics Vendors, you can also use Route4Me’s iOS and Android mobile apps that are designed to provide seamless continuity from the route planning and optimization process to navigation and near real-time tracking.
Route4Me’s tracking solutions and interactive maps allow you to view the Vehicle Position Refresh Rate of your telematics vehicles right on the map. To view the Vehicle Position Refresh Rate of the telematics vehicle that is assigned to a particular route, first, open this route in the Route Editor. Next, enable the tracking history of the assigned vehicle on the opened route. To do so, click on “Tracking” in the top right corner of the map → Click on “Route” → Select the time interval for the tracking trail.
Once you enable the tracking history on the interactive map, the Vehicle Position Refresh Rate of the assigned telematics vehicle will be displayed on the map in the form of GPS breadcrumbs (blue dots on the blue tracking trail). GPS breadcrumbs are the blue dots that are displayed on the blue tracking trail. The tracking trail (blue driving lines) indicates the real-live roads that were driven by the assigned vehicle and driver on the given route. Breadcrumbs are the points on the map from which GPS signals were sent from the corresponding telematics vehicle (device) to Route4Me. The intervals at which GPS breadcrumbs are located on the tracking trail depend on the Vehicle Position Refresh Rate and the moving speed of the assigned telematics vehicle. For example, if the Vehicle Position Refresh Rate of the given telematics vehicle was set to 60 seconds, it means that each breadcrumb on the tracking trail was generated every 60 seconds – every 60 seconds a GPS signal was sent from the corresponding telematics vehicle to Route4Me. Thus, depending on the speed of the telematics vehicle and the defined Vehicle Position Refresh Rate, GPS breadcrumbs can be placed at different intervals from each other on the tracking trail.
For maximum convenience and productivity, Route4Me can retrieve GPS data from almost all types of GPS devices and various mobile tracking applications installed on a smartphone. Depending on your telematics provider and used telematics device(s), you can adjust different Vehicle Position Refresh Rate for your Telematics Connections. For example, Route4Me’s iOS and Android mobile apps are capable of sending GPS signals to your Route4Me account as frequently as every second.
