Smart Zones Routing – Using Smart Address Clusters to Plan and Optimize Routes

With Route4Me, you can easily import and geocode hundreds of thousands of addresses and locations from your CRM or any other system and then use them for planning routes. To ensure that you get the most cost-efficient routes, Route4Me’s proprietary Smart Zones algorithm allows you to split large numbers of imported addresses into the most optimal number of Smart Address Clusters. You can then optimize the preferred number of routes within each Smart Cluster based on your specific constraints.

For more convenience, Route4Me’s auto address clusterization can split all your imported addresses into the best number of Smart Address Zones fully automatically. Alternatively, you can adjust your Smart Zones rules and define the preferred number of Smart Address Clusters you want to be generated.

Furthermore, Route4Me’s Smart Clusterization permits you to control the number of routes planned within each generated Smart Address Cluster. You can use the Single Driver Route optimization to plan a single route within each generated Smart Zone. Or, you can use the Multiple Drivers Route Optimization with various Advanced Constraints for the system to determine and plan the most optimal number of routes within each Smart Cluster.

 

To plan new routes using Smart Zones, first, go to Plan New Route from the navigation menu. After that, select one of the preferred route data import methods: Interactive Map Editor, Copy-and-Paste, Upload a File, or Import Data.

Start planning new routes from Smart Zones by going to Plan New Route from the navigation menu.

 

Alternatively, you can use Smart Zones auto-clusterization when planning routes from Address Territories or using the Address Book Map. For example, you can pick an existing Address Territory and split it into the most optimal number of Smart Zones or draw a shape around your addresses on the map and then split them into multiple Smart Address Clusters.

You can plan new routes from Smart Zones using Address Territories and Address Book Map routing.

 

Next, specify the preferred optimization parameters for the routes that will be planned within the generated Smart Zones. NOTE: The specified optimization parameters will determine how many routes will be planned within each Address Cluster.

  1. Go to the Optimization tab;
  2. Select the preferred optimization type: Single Driver RouteMultiple Drivers Route, or Balanced Team Route;
  3. Select where you want your optimized route(s) to end.

Specify the optimization settings for routes that will be planned within each Smart Zones Cluster.

 

If you want to see address markers of all geocoded addresses on the map in the Verify Addresses on Map window, click No when prompted with the corresponding Performance Warning message.

Performance Warning to hide successfully geocoded map markers - click "No" to show markers.

 

NOTE: The Smart Zones Settings automatically become available in the Verify Addresses on Map window when you import or use more than 500 addresses or locations. To open the Smart Zones Settings window, click on the menu icon next to the Smart Zones button.

Open the Smart Zones settings window to specify the number of Smart Zones to be created.

 

Fully Automatic – Let Route4Me Pick the Best Number of Smart Zones

When you select the Fully Automatic option, Route4Me’s proprietary auto-clustering algorithm will automatically split all imported addresses into the most optimal number of Address Clusters (Smart Zones).

Let Me Pick the Number of Smart Zones

When you specify the preferred number of Smart Zones, Route4Me’s Smart Clustering algorithm will split all imported addresses into the defined number of Smart Address Clusters, where each Address Cluster will contain the most optimal number of addresses or locations.

Specify the number of Smart Zones you want all imported addresses to be split into.

 

Let Me Pick the Maximum Amount of Addresses per Smart Zone

When you specify the maximum number of addresses per Smart Zone, Route4Me will split all imported addresses into the most optimal number of Smart Address Clusters, where each Address Cluster will not exceed the specified address limit.

Specify the limit of addresses or locations each generated Smart Zone should not exceed.

 

Overlapping Smart Zones

Depending on the locations of the included addresses and regardless of the specified Smart Zones settings, some Smart Zones can overlap each other on the map. Smart Zones can overlap when addresses from one Smart Zone are located in close proximity to the addresses from other Smart Zones, making their shapes with virtual straight-line borders overlap.

NOTE: Each address can be included into a single Smart Zone only. Thus, when you have overlapping Smart Zones, addresses from one Smart Zone will not be included into the routes planned within any other Smart Zone.

The borders of some Smart Zones can overlap because of the location of their included addresses.

 

Next, make sure that your Smart Zones are enabled by checking the corresponding box and then click on the Finish Import button to plan one or multiple routes within each generated Smart Address Cluster. NOTE: When planning single-depot routes using Smart Zones, all routes planned within all generated Smart Zones will start or start and end at the same single depot (address/location), which is the first imported address.

Don't forget to enable Smart Zones by checking the corresponding box before planning the route(s).

 

Smart Zones Routing with the Single Driver Route Optimization

When you use the Single Driver Route optimization type with SmartZone clusterization, Route4Me will plan a single route within each generated Address Cluster (Smart Zone).

Single Driver Route optimization will plan a single route from all addresses in the cluster.

 

Smart Zones Routing with the Multiple Drivers Route Optimization

When you use the Multiple Drivers Route optimization type, Route4Me will account for the predefined optimization constraints and plan the most optimal number of routes within each separate Smart Zone.

Multiple Drivers Route optimization can plan multiple routes inside one Smart Zone Cluster.

 

When the system plans multiple routes within each separate Smart Zone, each planned route is prefixed with its corresponding Address Cluster name (i.e., Cluster 5) and its route number in the given Address Cluster (i.e., Part 001).

NOTE: When planning single-depot routes using Smart Zones, all routes planned within all generated Smart Zones will start or start and end at the same single depot (address/location), which is the first imported address.

  • When you select the End Route at Any Address optimization parameter, all routes planned within their corresponding Smart Zones will start from the same depot and end at the most optimal destination (as in the example below).
  • When you select the Roundtrip optimization parameter, all routes planned within their corresponding Smart Zones will start and end at the same single depot.

When using the Multiple Drivers route optimization, there can be multiple routes in one cluster.
